I Quit: The End of a Job and the Start of a New Career
Anton: “How are you doing this, Vincent? How have you done any of this?” Vincent: “This is how I did it, Anton. I never saved anything for the swim back.” — Gattaca (1997)
Today I have been given the opportunity to live the American Dream. I’m officially a full time entrepreneur. Having the opportunity to work for yourself is a dream that my family has aspired to for over a hundred years, so I want to briefly reflect on how I got here.
Seven months ago, Alejandro and I started Monte Largo Financial Advisors with an audacious goal: to help everyone we know (and lots of folks we don’t) achieve Financial Independence. We still have a long way to go, but today marks the next big step in this adventure. I just quit my regular 9 to 5 job to run Monte Largo full time, a crucial step toward buying myself the most coveted luxury good of all: freedom. The first thing I’m doing with my freedom is writing this blog post to explain what this decision means for you, our family, friends, and current and future clients.
Some of my great grandparents were homesteaders in the Oklahoma panhandle who envisioned a more secure and comfortable life for their children despite growing up during the Great Depression. With their parents’ support, my grandparents on my father’s side became school teachers and school administrators. My mother’s parents became pipefitters and store clerks and both sides diligently saved what they could to put their children through college. This dedication to preparing for a better future enabled both of my parents to become educated working professionals before their recent (and early) retirement.
I credit today’s good news to this legacy of planning, persistence and personal responsibility. As Warren Buffett would say, I’ve won the ovarian lottery. Had I been born into different circumstances, none of this might have been possible. I fully understand and appreciate that fact.
I must also sincerely thank my clients for trusting Monte Largo over the past seven months and for referring us to your friends and family members. We’ve been blessed with enormous interest from young professionals and professional professionals alike who are looking for something more fulfilling than the standard plan of working 9 to 5 until you die. Our clients know that we don’t have to follow the script that life hands us — we have the ability and responsibility to choose what we do.
That’s really what this company is all about. It will take more than a financial planning company to solve systemic problems like poverty, wealth inequality, and national debt, but each of these problems will require financially healthy and empowered families to address them. We can’t do everything at the individual level, but we can do so much more than we’re doing now.
That’s why we’re working to build a community of people who are forward thinkers, who make bold and responsible decisions, and who are dedicated to living the happiest and most impactful life with the time they’ve been gifted. Monte Largo is here to help anyone who wants to live a more purposeful life.
I’m excited to give more of my time to our present and future clients. Our clients come from many walks of life. Some arrive struggling to overcome debt while others arrive with some savings but no idea exactly what they’re saving for and why. Everyone’s dreams are different, but we all want to live with a purpose — and to never let money limit our ability to achieve it.
The path to a purposeful life begins with a challenge to our present selves and a commitment to our future selves to define our goals…and to do what’s necessary to achieve them. Let’s work together to build the next generation of wealthy, healthy, and happy people who are empowered to do good for the world. Are you ready to commit to the challenge?
